Unwearable underwear, crazy accessories and jealousy-inciting model physiques. It’s that time of year again.
The Victoria’s Secret fashion show is this weekend’s hot topic. The 18th annual lingerie parade was recorded on Thursday night, to be shown on US television on December 10th.
Pictures and sneak-peek videos from the show draw interest and scrutiny from all over the globe, but what makes this spectacular so alluring? You don’t need to look to the Heavens for an answer…
The Victoria’s Secret models are a class of their own, set apart from the expressionless and skinny runway crew. The toned bodies of these women are products of intense workout regimes and protein-rich diets. (For most of them anyway, Cara Delevingne told Grazia Daily that her pre-show diet consisted of Domino’s pizza and chicken strippers.)
The Angels promote sexy as being fit and strong. It’s refreshing to see the human side of models who appear to genuinely enjoy themselves.
Some may argue that the show has little to do with actual fashion, but this year unveiled some stunning and strange creations.
The coveted opening piece was worn by South African beauty Candice Swanepoel. The Fantasy Bra this year is the most expensive to date, costing $10 million. The bra and belt featured diamonds, sapphires and a 52 karat ruby set in gold.
The night was divided into seven segments, each with themed ensembles. ‘British Invasion’ had top hats and punk-throwback styles, while ‘Pink Network’ had psychedelic prints, balloons and woollen accessories.
The glitzy ‘Snow Angel’ section saw Karlie Kloss shine in a jewel-embellished catsuit. Lindsay Ellington wore a 3D printed Swarovski Snowflake structure, a first of its kind.
Taylor Swift could have easily passed as an Angel as she glided through her performances and interacted amiably with the models. Rockers Fall Out Boy added a punk element to the ‘British Invasion’ section of the show. British band Neon Jungle brought back the Spice Girls pop era vibe.
The makeup team acheieved the ‘Girl Next Door’ look with Victoria Secret’s cosmetics: tinted moisturizer for the face, soft brown eyeshadow and liner, nude lips, rosy and bronzed cheeks.
To get those loose, beach inspired waves, just ask your hairdresser for a curley blowdry. If you are using GHDs at home, work through the ends with the wand twisted at 180 degree angle.
Irish fans of the brand can now shop until they drop as a brand new flagship store opened up in Dublin’s Airport Terminal 2 on November 28th. Irish woman Margaret McDonald was appointed as President of Victoria’s Secret during the Summer. With over 1,000 stores across the US and net sales of 4,981 million dollars in 2012, the Kildare native will have a busy tenure ahead of her to maintain the Victoria’s Secret success story.
